Washed vs. Oiled Leather: Define the Finish Before Sampling

OCVA’s vintage direction centres on leather character. A useful sample brief distinguishes the intended washing effect from any oil or wax treatment.

Describe the result

Specify the colour, surface character, softness and desired ageing effect using a physical reference where possible. A photograph alone cannot define the leather article or its hand feel.

Keep the processes distinct

Washing and oil or wax finishing are different decisions. Ask which combination suits the selected leather, construction and intended use; do not assume every vintage-looking shoe uses the same treatment.

Approve the variation

Agree on an acceptable finish range and review the sample’s flex, rubbing, fit and appearance. Exact materials and any required tests belong in the quotation and approved specification.
